Welcome to Mike's Skydiver

Skydiver flight simulator Project Highlights

Demonstration of accurate skydiver p.o.v. system that can feed location, orientation, and status to a 3D rendering system. (As of Mar 2009, the prototype works in "Runtime Revolution" for Macintosh and is being re-written in Java.)

Why build simulator? Several motivations

Science

Education:

Game:

What computer science involved, what can we learn?

Wind dynamics, projectile physics, 3D rotation and motion of viewpoint.

Realtime performance issues

Turn rates, transitions, timers, headings.

objects updates (divers & planes moving, instruments changing)

User interface issues

Simple access to basic commands

Custom settings (preferences) on a separate page

[screenshot of settings page]

Is there access for non-techy artists? Game players? Instructors?

It's possible to customize different kinds of situations:

airplanes

Speed, altitude, and flight path, and capacity for multiple divers are already variables.

divers (weight, equip, metric, windresist)

parachutes (performance)

dropzones (type of plane(s), elevation, number of divers)

Future plans

Diver's point of view (landmarks, sky, altimeter)

Chase skydiver with camera

A multi-player formation skydive game
